How to Start Freelancing: Choose the Right Skill and Build a Successful Online Career

Nowadays, freelancing is a very common word. Many people often ask me,
“I want to do freelancing” or “I want to earn money online, what should I learn?”

Then I usually reply,
“Freelancing is a big world. There are many things to learn here. Whatever you learn, you will get some result from it. But which thing you should learn, or which skill will help you earn money — that depends on you.”

Still, many people ask me,
“Which skill should I learn to earn money quickly?”

This question makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Because I already said, freelancing is a big platform. There are many small skills inside it. If you learn any one of them properly, it will give you a result, In Sha Allah.

Now, which one you should learn — only you know that.
But yes, you can ask, “How will I know what’s good for me to learn?”

That’s a good question!

Before you decide what to learn, first you need to know what skills are available in freelancing. You need to get a short idea (overview) of each skill. You can easily do this by going to YouTube and searching for freelancing.

When you search, you’ll see many skills and videos explaining each one.
Watch some good videos and take a basic idea. Then you’ll understand what you might enjoy or be good at.

For example, let’s say a boy is good at drawing since childhood. He can create ideas and draw nicely. Then he should learn graphic design. Because he already has creative thinking. Now if he learns design tools, he can do great work.

Or, someone is good at math and logic, and stays calm while solving problems. For him, programming is a good skill. If he learns one programming language from start to end, he can work in the programming field.

So, when you get an idea about all the freelancing skills, you’ll automatically understand what suits you.

I won’t suggest any one skill directly. Because if you search on YouTube, you’ll find all the ideas yourself.
I’ll just show you the path — how to start.

First step:
Don’t ask others, “I want to earn online, what should I do?”
Instead, go to YouTube and search:

  • “How to start freelancing”
  • “Different skills of freelancing”
  • “What is freelancing?”

You will get many good videos. Watch them. You’ll get a clear idea.

Then, decide your skill. What you should learn depends on what you enjoy.
Ask yourself:
What do I love doing? What can I do with passion?

Second step:
Think about market demand. Check if this skill has value now and in the future.
Because some skills become old, and people don’t use them much.
So, choose a skill that is in demand now and will also be useful later.

Now you may ask, “How do I know which skill has demand now and in future?”

It’s very easy. Just Google it.

Example: You want to learn Python (a programming language).
Go to Google and search:

  • “Future demand of Python”
  • “Is Python useful in future?”

You’ll find many articles and videos about it.
You can do this for any skill.

Then, know what you need to learn that skill.
Maybe some skills need expensive tools or software.
Or maybe it’s hard to find learning materials for some topics.

Still, this is not a big problem — if you really want to learn something, you will find a way.

But it’s better to check everything in the beginning, so you don’t give up later.

Now, here’s the biggest mistake most students make —
They first think: “Which skill will help me earn money quickly?”

This is a dangerous but common mistake.

I say “dangerous” because when they search “how to earn quickly”, they find useless things — like solving captchas or clicking ads. These are not real skills. It wastes time and gives wrong ideas.

But this mistake is also “needed” — because yes, we all want to earn money in the end.

So, of course, we should learn something that helps us earn well.

But we should NOT think:
“How fast can I earn money?”

We should think:
“How can I learn this skill completely and become good at it?”

Focus on learning first.
Build your skill properly. Then, earning money will come naturally.

If you always think about money in the beginning, your learning won’t be strong.
You’ll try a skill, learn a little, and then go to Fiverr or Freelancer.com and open a profile — and start looking for work.

But what will happen?

You won’t get work. Or if you do, you won’t be able to deliver it well. Clients will be unhappy.
Your freelancing career may end before it starts.

So remember —
First, learn the skill fully. Be confident.
When you know you can do a project and satisfy a client — only then go to a marketplace and start working.
